Yes, case by case. Many lenders work with sole traders, and growth finance isn't only for limited companies. If you're borrowing £25,000 or less, though, we arrange that through a Start Up Loan instead.

Borrowing £25,000 or less

Lending of £25,000 or less to a sole trader, or to a partnership of two or three partners, is regulated consumer credit. We arrange this kind of borrowing through Start Up Loans, which are open to businesses that are pre-launch or trading for up to 60 months. See Start Up Loan eligibility.

Borrowing more than £25,000

We consider sole traders case by case. What lenders look for is the same as for a company:

  • at least 12 months of trading history
  • accounts or tax returns that show your income, plus up-to-date management figures
  • a clear use of funds
  • the ability to repay from your trading income

What's different for sole traders

There's no separation between you and the business, so any lending is personal to you. Lenders look closely at your personal credit history and your personal finances.

Partnerships

Partnerships of more than three partners, and LLPs, are assessed like other businesses. See Business growth loan eligibility: who can apply? for the full criteria.
