What to look for in payment tools

Map the moment when a customer pays. A shop counter, an outdoor event and a visit to a customer’s premises create different requirements. Think about available connectivity, power, the devices your staff carry and how quickly the next customer needs to be served. Choose equipment around that setting.

Check the whole process, not just the reader. Consider receipts, refunds, reconciliation and the records passed to your bookkeeping system. If you already use a till or stock system, confirm compatibility before replacing part of the setup. Plan how staff will be trained and what they should do if a payment cannot be completed.

Read the provider’s eligibility and verification requirements and the current terms for the particular product. A range of devices does not mean every device has identical capabilities. Try the normal transaction journey and a few less common situations with your team. The useful choice is one that supports your trading pattern and gives you a clear daily process for taking payments, checking the records and resolving problems.
