56% of SMEs expect the Budget to leave businesses worse off, YouGov finds
Most small and medium-sized businesses expect next week's Budget to leave firms worse off. According to a YouGov poll published on 21 October, 56% of SMEs think businesses will be in a worse position after the Budget. Only 14% expect things to improve.
The Chancellor, John Healey, delivers the Budget on 28 October. He has said it will "recognise the cost of business".

01What the poll found

YouGov surveyed 2,010 business decision makers online between 5 and 19 October. Across firms of all sizes, 52% expect the Budget to leave businesses worse off. Just 15% expect it to help.
Larger firms were a little less gloomy. Among them, 48% expect a worse position and 17% a better one.
Many smaller firms also feel short of support. Among micro businesses, with fewer than ten staff, 80% said firms their size are not getting enough help from the government.

02Cash flow worries SMEs more

Economic instability was the most common worry. It was in the top three issues for 52% of businesses. Growth came second, at 37%.
Cash flow was a top-three issue for 21% of all businesses. Among SMEs that rose to 28%, against 17% at larger firms. YouGov suggests larger firms may be better able to bridge short-term gaps.

03What you can do before 28 October

Nothing in the Budget is confirmed until the Chancellor speaks. But you do not need to wait to see where your own cash is heading.
A 13-week cash flow forecast shows the money coming in and going out, week by week, for the next three months. It picks out your lowest week, so you can act before you reach it. Our new guide explains how to build a 13-week cash flow forecast.
If the forecast shows a gap, it is usually easier to arrange finance early. A broker who works on growth finance can look at the options with you.
