Retail sales rose 0.5% in August after July's fall. What the ONS release means for Q4 stock

Retail sales rose 0.5% in August 2026, reversing July's fall, the ONS says. Food and online led while fuel fell. What the August 2026 retail sales mean for Q4 stock and stock finance.

Retail sales rose 0.5% in August after July's fall. What the ONS release means for Q4 stock
Retail sales volumes in Great Britain rose 0.5% in August 2026, the Office for National Statistics said on 18 September. That reverses July's 0.5% fall. Sales were 2.4% higher than in the same three months a year earlier. For a small retailer deciding how much Christmas stock to order, the question is whether July was a blip. The August numbers say it probably was, with two cautions.

01The headline in one paragraph

According to the ONS, volumes rose 0.9% in the three months to August against the three months to May. August alone was up 0.5%. Total volumes are now at their second highest level since April 2022. Online spending rose 2.5% on the month and 8.9% on the year.

02The mix underneath: food strong, fuel weak, department stores back

The ONS put the three-month rise down to strong online sales in June and to food stores, where supermarkets did well in July and August. Drinks retailers pointed to promotions, hot weather and the World Cup.
Non-food stores rose 0.6% in August. Department stores recovered from a July fall that retailers blamed on stock availability. Clothing stores partly recovered from July, when June promotions had pulled sales forward.
Fuel is the weak spot. Fuel volumes fell in August as prices rose sharply. Retailers told the ONS that drivers may be filling only part of the tank.

03What the August 2026 retail sales mean for Q4 stock

Two cautions before you order. First, monthly figures are volatile, and the ONS says so itself. The three-month trend is the safer read, and it is positive. Second, the growth is uneven. Food, drink and online are carrying it. Big-ticket non-food is recovering rather than booming.
So should you lock in Q4 stock now?
If your lines sold through in August, the data supports ordering with confidence. If you sell big-ticket goods, order in stages and keep some budget back for November. Our guide on retail sales and Q4 stock finance set out how to size a stock order against a cautious forecast, and it still applies.
Paying for stock before it sells is a cash flow gap, not a profit problem. Growth finance for a business can cover that gap, so the Christmas order does not come out of the money you need to trade in October. bizbritain arranges it through specialist lenders, and you see the shape of the deal before you commit.
The July release, and why it worried retailers, is in our story on the July fall.
