Battery-electric cars reach 29.8% of the UK new car market
New car registrations rose 13.7% in August 2026 and battery-electric cars took 29.8% of the market. Most of the work that creates goes to small businesses.
UK new car registrations rose 13.7% in August 2026. Battery-electric cars took 29.8% of the market, close to one new car in three.
According to the SMMT, 94,236 new cars were registered in the month. It was the ninth month of growth in a row. Plug-in hybrids grew 39.8% and hybrids grew 26.3%. Private buyers were up 19.0%, fleet buyers up 10.1%.
Every one of those cars needs someone to fit a charger, service it, replace the tyres and check the battery later on. Most of that work goes to small businesses.
That makes auto-adjacent trades one of the few parts of the UK economy with a clear tailwind right now. Electricians, garages, mobile fitters and fleet advisers are all in the path of it.
The SMMT was careful about the headline. August is a low-volume month, so the trade body called September the acid test.
There is a second detail worth knowing. According to the Department for Transport, the UK had 121,171 public chargepoints on 1 July 2026, but only 5,119 were added in the first half of the year. That compares with 13,281 added across the whole of 2025.
So the cars are arriving faster than the public charging network is growing. For a small business, that points the opportunity towards servicing, repair and home charging rather than large public charging contracts.
We have set out six of those businesses, and how owners typically fund the equipment, in our guide to building a business around the UK electric car boom.
