Yes, provided you have meaningful sector experience, a credible plan and the right capital structure. Lenders fund first-time owner-operators every week, particularly management buy-ins.

What makes a first-time buyer fundable

  • Experience in the same industry, ideally at a senior or management level.
  • A credible plan for the handover and the first year.
  • Money of your own in the deal, typically 10% to 30% of the price. See How much deposit do I need to buy a business?.
  • A good target: profitable, with a sensible price.
  • Seller support, such as part of the price deferred, which keeps the seller invested in a smooth handover.

What counts against you

No experience in the sector, a stretched price, or very little money of your own. We'll be honest with you on day one about whether your profile fits the target.

Buying a smaller business?

A Start Up Loan can help you buy an existing business if you haven't owned it for more than 60 months. See Can I use a Start Up Loan or the Growth Guarantee Scheme to buy a business?.
