Can AI write a business plan for a Start Up Loan? It can help you write it. You still need to supply accurate information, check the figures and explain the assumptions. Your bizbritain adviser carries out the assessment, and they are checking whether the numbers, the customers and the costs are yours. According to Simply Business, 47% of UK small businesses now use AI tools, but only 19% feel very confident with them. This guide explains what to let AI do, what to keep for yourself, and where our free myplan tool fits in.

Section 01

What does the new research actually say?

According to Simply Business, AI use among UK small businesses has more than doubled in a year. Its 2026 SME Insights Report surveyed 1,842 small business owners between 30 July and 7 August 2026.

47%of UK small businesses now use AI tools, according to Simply Business
22%used them in 2025, so use has more than doubled in a year
19%describe themselves as very confident using AI day to day
36%name accuracy as a barrier to using it

So what are people using it for?

According to the same report, creating content is the most common use, at 63% of those using AI. Problem solving comes next at 53%, and generating ideas at 50%. Nearly half say it saves them time on admin.

Why does that matter if you are applying for a loan?

Because a business plan is written content, and a cash flow forecast is a problem to solve. Those are exactly the jobs people are handing to AI. The gap between using it and being confident with it is where applications go wrong.

Section 02

Can AI write a business plan for a Start Up Loan?

Start with what a Start Up Loan application needs. You submit a business plan and a 12-month cash flow forecast. You also submit a personal survival budget. That is a table of your own monthly income and outgoings.

There is a free business plan template, and the plan must cover nine sections. They are your business, your objectives, your skills and experience, and your target customers. Then come the market and your competition, your sales and marketing plans, and your operational plans. The last two are a back-up plan and supporting evidence.

You do not have to write any of this from a blank page. myplan, our free AI tool, builds the plan, the survival budget and the forecast by asking you plain questions. The workbook itself takes around 30 minutes rather than days or weeks.

What happens to the plan once you send it?

Your bizbritain adviser reviews the finished application and carries out the full assessment against the scheme's three tests: eligibility, affordability and viability. In practice that means your credit history, whether you can afford the repayments, and whether the business is viable. Viable means the plan shows enough demand for what you sell, and goals you can reasonably reach. Every approval and every decline gets a second internal review.

That is the honest answer to the question. AI can produce the document. It cannot produce the evidence inside it. Your adviser is not grading your prose. They are testing whether you know your customers, your prices and your costs.

Myth 01

“If the plan reads well, it will pass”

A polished plan with borrowed numbers is a weak plan. AI tools write with confidence, and they can still be factually wrong. Review everything an AI tool writes before it goes anywhere near your application.

Your adviser will ask you to explain your figures. AI will not be in the room.

Section 03

Where does AI genuinely save you time?

In our experience, AI is useful for the parts of a plan that are about structure and wording. Here are five jobs it does well.

  1. Turning your notes into sentences

Write down what you know in bullet points. Ask the tool to turn them into short paragraphs. Then check every line still says what you meant.

  2. Checking spelling, grammar and tone

This is the safest use of all. Paste in a section and ask for corrections only, not new content.

  3. Listing the questions you have not answered

Give the tool the nine section headings and your draft. Ask which questions a reader would still have. That list is your to-do list.

  4. Drafting a competitor comparison table

Ask for a blank table with columns for price, service, location and opening hours. Then fill it in yourself from real visits and real websites.

  5. Rehearsing the conversation

Ask the tool to play a cautious lender and question your plan. If you cannot answer something, that is a gap to fix before you apply.

Section 04

Where will AI let you down?

Four things in a Start Up Loan application cannot come from a chatbot.

The first is your market research. The business plan asks how many potential customers are in your target area. AI will give you a confident number with nothing behind it. You need a real one, from local data or from your own counting.

The second is your prices and your margins. Your plan has to show how you arrived at each price and what margin you need to make a profit. Those are your costs and your decisions.

The third is your personal survival budget. It lists your own household income and bills. No tool knows them, and your adviser uses them to judge whether you can afford the loan.

The fourth is your skills and experience. What your adviser cares about most is how you plan to address any gaps. That is a question about you, not about the writing.

Is there a risk in pasting your plan into an AI tool?

There can be. Simply Business found that security and privacy concerns were the top barrier for small businesses, at 44%. Your plan holds your personal finances and your customer details. Check the tool's privacy settings before you paste anything in, and leave your bank details out.

Section 05

How do you use AI without it going wrong?

Keep one rule in mind. You are responsible for every word in the application, whoever typed it.

So work in this order. Do the research first, in the real world. Write your numbers down before you open any tool. Then use AI to shape the words around facts you already have. Read the whole thing back out loud. If a sentence describes something you could not explain to a stranger, cut it.

Our guide on completing the business plan workbook walks through each section. Our guide on what a Start Up Loan can pay for helps you list the spend the forecast needs.

Where bizbritain fits in

We are a Start Up Loans Business Support Partner. The documents, the adviser and the assessment all happen with us. Approved applications go to our Start Up Loans finance partner, which runs its final checks, issues the loan agreement and provides the funds. bizbritain never lends the money.

The difference between a general chatbot and myplan is what it asks you. myplan is our free AI tool. It asks plain questions about your customers, your prices and your costs, and builds the business plan, the personal survival budget and the 12-month cash flow forecast from your answers. The workbook itself takes around 30 minutes rather than days or weeks, and it is free for every bizbritain applicant. The numbers stay yours, which is exactly what your adviser wants to see. myplan shortens the preparation. It does not make the assessment any less thorough.

Once the application is finished, the wait is short. Most applicants are approved within one to two weeks of submitting a finished application, provided you reply promptly to anything your adviser asks for. The fastest can be approved in as little as a week. Timing depends on any further work the documents need, prompt replies to information requests and the finance partner's final checks. Once approved, the loan can be drawn down within 24 hours.

If you are ready to start, the first step is applying for a Start Up Loan through our eligibility check. It takes about a minute and involves no credit search. The formal application's personal credit check is a hard search, recorded on your credit file, and it may affect your score.

This guide is general information, not financial advice. Applications are subject to status, affordability and lender criteria.
