A broker earns their fee on complex, large or declined cases. Going direct is better when the loan is small and simple. Here is the honest split.

Business loan broker vs direct lender is really a question about your case, not about brokers. Simple, small and quick? Go direct. Large, layered, unusual or previously declined? A broker earns their fee. This is the honest split, from a broker with no reason to pretend otherwise.
Most pages on this question are written by lenders selling the direct route, or written for another country's market. Here is the UK version, argued both ways.

Section 01

What each one actually does

A direct lender lends its own money. You apply, its credit team decides, and you get its products only. If your case fits its box, this is the shortest path to funds.
A broker sits across many lenders and places your case. The job is routing and structuring: which lender has appetite for your sector, your numbers and your timing.
A comparison site is a directory with forms. It shows you options. It does not build your case, challenge a decline, or tell you when the answer should be nobody.

Section 02

Five questions that decide it

  1. Is the ask small and simple?

A straightforward loan under about £50k, with clean accounts, is direct-lender territory. Speed is the product. A broker adds a step you may not need.

  2. Do you already know the product and the lender?

If your own bank will do it at a fair price, take the yes. We say that to callers every week.

  3. Have you been declined?

A decline is information, not the end. A broker reads why, fixes what is fixable, and routes the case to lenders with a different credit appetite.

  4. Is the deal large or layered?

Facilities above £250k often mix products: a term loan here, asset finance there, invoice funding behind it. Structuring that mix is broker work.

  5. Is your sector out of favour?

Every lender runs an appetite list, and the lists move. Knowing who is open to your sector this quarter is a broker's stock in trade.

Section 03

How is a broker different from a comparison site?

A comparison site optimises for clicks. A broker is accountable for an outcome.
The difference shows in three places. A broker prepares the case before a lender ever sees it. A broker challenges a decline instead of listing the next name. And a broker should tell you when borrowing is the wrong answer for now.

Section 04

What does a broker cost?

Ask any broker two questions before you engage. How are you paid, and by whom?
Our answer: on advisory work we charge a disclosed fee and take zero lender commission. The fee model is published and marginal-rate, and the success fee is only payable on drawdown.
Plenty of good brokers work on lender commission instead. The point is not that one model is wrong. The point is that you should know which one you are in before you sign.
The market context explains why routing now matters so much. According to the British Business Bank's Small Business Finance Markets report, challenger and specialist banks supplied 60% of gross SME bank lending in 2025. The high street is no longer the default.
